1. What Is A Creative Side Hustle?

A creative online business is simply the practice of using creative skills to build a business around  services or products which can be sold to a global online audience.

Typical creative online businesses may include selling digital products, content creation such as writing or creating videos, illustration, graphic design or web design and development.

When I started building my freelance business, I didn’t have one particular direction in mind. I was interested in various routes of income that would be best suited to my skillset.

So I focussed on testing three main areas:

1. What could I already do?
I did an audit of the skills I already had and explored whether I could consolidate them to form the basis of a solid online business.

2. What would I like to develop?
Creating any online business takes time so I needed to choose areas of work that would sustain my interest in the long term.

3. What could I scale into a larger business over time?
It’s fair to say that not everything you try is going to work first time, so trying various ideas gave me valuable insight into what had the potential to grow into something substantial.

2. Why Are Creative Online Side Hustles Important?

First of all, lets have a brief look at the 5 major elements that make up any online side hustle:

  • Words - Advertising, Social Copy, Blogs, Digital Marketing, product descriptions
  • Pictures - Illustrations, Graphics, Photography
  • Code - Web design, games, Apps, Cloud Based Software
  • Video - Entertainment, Educational, Instructional, Factual, Virtual + Augmented Reality
  • Sound - Sound effects, Podcasts, Voice Overs, Music

These elements make up the building blocks of your content creation skills.

So Whether your main focus is to use your skills to create your own products and services, or promote the products and services of others, you will at some point need to engage with one or more of these fundamental elements and provide content around these areas.

Why Creative Online Side Hustles Are Important

Diversifies your skills over time

Helps you meet your financial goals
• Offers flexibility and autonomy
Opens up networking and collaboration opportunities
Develops your entrepreneurial skills

These areas are important for you, if you are considering creating a side hustle. They  allow you to traverse the world of online content creation on your terms and build a skillset that's unique to you, forming the basis of your professional identity.

Can You Turn A Side Hustle Into A Creative Freelance Career?

I'm going to give you the short answer first:

Yes!

When I started experimenting with side hustles, I wasn't particularly skilled in many areas.

But what I did know was that I wanted to create a work environment I could control, grow and evolve over time.

As a creative, the idea of specialising in one thing for the rest of my life didn't sit too comfortably, so I wanted the freedom of being able to move through different creative pursuits.

So how did I do this?

I simply started to explore more than one creative direction. At first I looked at low to no cost side hustles like illustration or social media management. Some things I enjoyed. Some not so much.

Once I gained some traction, I was able to invest back into my side hustles.

First I bought a digital camera.

Then a better computer.

Then software.

Then I started learning about digital marketing and online courses.

And over time, I began to measure and assess the skills I was developing and most importantly, the areas I was having success in.

So I doubled down on those areas, improved my skills, made better contacts, used digital marketing strategies and slowly ground away at building my reputation for what I was offering.

Hybrid freelance business

And gradually those creative side hustles began to give me a set of overlapping skills, so I could eventually consolidate them into what I like to call a 'hybrid freelance business.'

Sometimes known as a portfolio career.

"By developing multiple creative skills over time, you can potentially create a hybrid business that keeps you in demand for years to come."

The opportunities to create a freelance business today are a completely different ball game.

Sure there are the tried and tested creative routes like illustration, graphic design, film making and writing.

As long as we have the internet, these skills will always be needed.

But with the emergence of areas such as A.I and augmented reality, there has never been a better opportunity to explore the possibilities of new creative online side hustles.

We will get into some of these new exciting areas as well as looking at some of the tried and tested side hustle ideas.

Pro Tip:
You may not have a fully formed freelance plan when you start off, so test and grow your skillset with side hustles like a start up company. Measuring your performance and reacting to the results keeps you learning, growing and responding positively to forward momentum.

With all that said, let’s dive in to the very long list of side hustle ideas and you never know, one of them just might change your life. . .

1. Photography

If you enjoy capturing and portraying the world through a lens, then photography is the obvious place to start as a creative side hustle.

Photography as a side hustle

If you are already a hobbyist and find yourself snapping pictures wherever you go,  then you are most like taking high-quality photos already, so making the leap to making money with photography is well within your reach.

There are multiple photography genres to consider, including portrait photography, landscape photography, event photography, product photography, and more.

While I don't consider myself a professional photographer, I use photography all the time for various creative pursuits and freelance work, and being a massive movie fan, I naturally lean toward trying make my photographs as cinematic as I can.

As photography is such a broad medium, it's important to find a niche and a process that aligns with your interests and skills.

"There are several photography trends to watch out for in 2023, including shooting real film, flash photography, and neon night photography."

Some tips for getting into photography:

Develop your photography skills: Understanding basics like lighting, exposure, depth of field and composition are a great place to start. If you already have a digital or film camera, jump in and use those manual controls!

Make loads of mistakes (then learn from them): Not every picture you take is going to make the grade. And learning to be ok with this is part of the process.  But the best way to improve is to study and analyse your work. Always ask yourself 'how can I make this better next time?'

Take pictures every day: Develop a daily photography habit by using your smart phone as a photo sketchbook to explore ideas and themes. You can then dip into your camera roll for ideas later down the road.

Identify your niche: Determine what type of photography you want to specialize in, such as portrait, wedding, or landscape photography. This will help focus your efforts in creating a consistent narrative in your marketing efforts.

Invest in equipment over time: You don't need professional high end cameras to start. Your smartphone is more than capable of the job. Working with an app like Filmic Pro will give your pictures a high quality feel.

2. Graphic Design

Graphic design is one of the most in-demand freelance skills. 90% of the graphic design industry is made up of freelancers making it one of the best opportunities for creating a profitable side hustle as many small businesses, startups, and entrepreneurs don’t have the budget for a full-time designer.

Working as a graphic designer

Graphic design covers a broad are that often encompasses logo design, marketing materials, website graphics, and more.

I have found that Graphic design also develops useful skills like effective visual communication, attention to detail, creative problem solving, collaboration, and managing client expectations.

Even if you don’t plan to become a full-time designer, the extra income and real-world experience is valuable.

A great way to develop a freelance graphic design side hustle is to use lead generation platforms like SolidGigs who search for jobs to match your design skills.

3. Illustration

My very first experience of a creative side hustle was illustration, creating editorial work for magazines, newspapers and websites.

It eventually became a substantial freelance career which opened up other avenues of income.

Illustration is the perfect medium for bridging art and design to create a unique distinctive visual language that can get you recognised.

This is me creating an art print inside Kittl, an online design platform with thousands of templates and graphics you can use to create your own designs:

Best Online Side Hustles For Creatives In 2023

Content creators deal in words, imagery, and videos, and their role is to create entertaining, educational, or captivating content that meets the interests and tackles the problems of a specific target audience.

They use various tools and software to produce images, animations, videos, graphics, articles, blog posts, memes, social media ads, and promotional copy.

Content creation is perhaps the most hybrid side hustle of all.

Pro Tip:
You can now use AI tools to assist in speeding up and making content creation more efficient.

I am using perplexity.ai to optimise my content creation, so I can find statistics and factual data quickly for this blog:

Content optimisation with perplexity.ai

Which can then be turned into headline grabbing content like this:

Here are some typical areas of content creation:

  • Social media management
  • Blogging
  • Video production
  • Podcasting
  • Copywriting
  • Graphic design
  • Online courses

Running a hybrid freelance business over the years has naturally required me to create content, most of the time for social media and specific platforms, to build brands and resonate with an engaged audience.

If your content can entertain, educate, inspire, and occasionally persuade that audience, then you will definitely be moving in the right direction.

Here's a few ideas for a content creation side hustle (Each one of these is a potential side hustle business in itself, which I have expanded on in this list.)

5. Print On Demand

Perhaps one of the most low risk side hustles is print-on-demand (POD) which allows you to sell customized products like t-shirts, mugs, and phone cases without needing to carry inventory.

You simply upload your designs, set your prices, and fulfill orders through a print-on-demand service. The vendor prints and ships the products for you as orders come in, handling logistics while you focus on design and marketing.

As a creative, it's easy to leverage online platforms like Etsy, Redbubble, and Teespring for your POD.

You can start selling your designs with little upfront investment  and as you build your shop, you retain creative control and earn passive income from every order.
